The herb contains anti-inflammatory properties that make it useful as a topical treatment for skin injuries. It stimulates the immune system and helps prevent colds and infections. It may also improve the symptoms of heart disease.

Astragalus was known in the time of first century Greek physician Dioscorides, and the word itself is even more ancient, deriving from a Greek word meaning "anklebone". Ankle bones were once used as a form of dice, and one conjecture is that astragalus so named because the rattling seedpods sounded like rolling dice.

The usual supplements of the astragalus contain about 500 mg of the herb. The suggested doses of such supplemental forms are about two to three tablets or capsules or if preferred 3-5 ml of the herbal tincture taken thrice every day.
