Thionyl chlorine is a fuming liquid which is easily valotilized and then form white fog with water vapour. It can melt in chloreform, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, etc. It will rapidly react to form SO2 and HCl while meeting with water and damp air. It begins to slowly breakdown while above the boiling point, will rapidly breakdown while at the temperature of 150℃, and will completely break down into Cl2、SO2、S2Cl at the temperature above 500℃. Thionyl chlorine reacts with sulfur trioxide to produce acyl chloride, and reacts with other metallic oxide to produce metal chloride and sulfur dioxide.
