Traded volumes of Atlantic market thermal coal derivatives in March rose 50% year-on-year to 305.43 million mt, although the volume fell 5% from the previous month, according to data from the London Energy Brokers' Association (LEBA) Wednesday.
Of the total, 99.1%, or 302.72 million mt, was cleared.
Volumes of Europe-delivered CIF ARA derivative contracts traded in March jumped 35% on the year to 251.43 million mt, but dropped 6% from February. Almost all of the contracts were cleared at 250.78 million mt.
South African Richards Bay volumes were 28.83 million mt in March, climbing 63% on the year but down 13% on the month. Cleared Richards Bay futures totaled 98% of the total volume at 28.17 million mt.
The data showed that 25.17 million mt of Australian globalCOAL Newcastle futures contracts were traded during March, of which 94%, or 23.76 million mt, were cleared.
