India's state-run coal producer Coal India Limited produced 536.51 million mt of coal in fiscal year 2015-2016 (April-March), up 8.5% on year, the company said in a regulatory filing late Friday.
CIL missed its production target for the fiscal year by 13.49 million mt, the company said in the filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange. Customer offtake for the year was 532.26 million mt against a targeted 550 million mt, the company said. Year-on-year, customer offtake was up by close to 9%.
According to coal ministry officials, the clearing of 4,179 hectares of forested land enabled Coal India to raise its coal production.
CIL accounts for around 80% of India's domestic coal production, and has a target to double its output to 1 billion mt by 2020.
