The January bidweek national average price rose 20 cents to average $2.46/MMBtu as forecasts for colder weather brought some strength to the futures market as the January contract expired, Inside FERC's Gas Market Report said Monday.
The January bidweek price at the benchmark Henry Hub increased 17 cents to $2.38/MMBtu.
That came as the NYMEX January gas futures contract settled at $2.372/MMBtu, up from the December contract's close of $2.206/MMBtu.
In New England, Algonquin Gas Transmission city-gates rose $1.61, or about 31%, to sit at $6.83/MMBtu, while Tennessee Gas Pipeline Zone 6 moved up $1.56 to $6.61/MMBtu.
Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Zone 6 New York jumped $1.74 to $4.76/MMBtu for January, while Texas Eastern Transmission zone M-3 increased 61 cents, or 30%, to $2.65/MMBtu.
But prices at several Appalachia points took a hit.
Dominion, Appalachia slid 20 cents to $1.30/MMBtu and Tennessee Zone 4-300 leg fell 16 cents to average $1.10/MMBtu.
Upper Midwest prices moved higher in the January survey.
The Chicago city-gates price rose 18 cents to $2.57/MMBtu, while the Michigan Consolidated Gas city-gate was up 10 cents to $2.50/MMBtu.
Rockies Express, Zone 3 delivered rose 17 cents to average $2.44/MMBtu.
In Texas, Houston Ship Channel rose 4 cents to $2.23/MMBtu.
Farther west, the Southern California Gas index rose 16 cents, or 7%, to $2.58/MMBtu, while the Pacific Gas and Electric city-gate was at $2.84/MMBtu after a 20-cent increase.
Northwest Pipeline Rocky Mountains rose 6 cents to average $2.28/MMBtu for January, while Northwest at the Canadian border increased 10 cents to $2.57/MMBtu.
