US oil and gas giant Chevron has started production from two new onshore wells in the Jalalabad gas field, northeastern Bangladesh, with output of around 90,000 Mcf/day, a senior Petrobangla official said Monday.
State minister for the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid inaugurated the natural gas supply from JB-6 and JB-7 wells at a function in Sylhet Sunday.
Chevron will start gas production from another new onshore gas well -- JB-8 -- within the first quarter of 2016, said the official.
Total natural gas production from the three new wells would be around 130,000 Mcf/d, raising Jalabad gas field's production to around 350,000 Mcf/d and making it Bangladesh's third largest producing gas-field with eight wells.
With the two new gas fields starting supply Sunday, Bangladesh's overall natural gas output has increased to around 2.80 Bcf/d.
Chevron Bangladesh is currently the largest natural gas producer in Bangladesh, delivering around 1.60 Bcf/d and accounting for over 57% of the country's total supply, according to Petrobangla data as on December 6.
It has three onshore gas fields -- Bibiyana, Jalalabad and Moulavi Bazar -- located in blocks 12, 13 and 14, respectively, in the northeastern Sylhet region.
