In a new study published in the journal ACS Nano, researchers explained that antimicrobial compounds from peppermint and cinnamon can be packaged into tiny capsules that can both kill bacteria on chronic wounds and actively promote healing.

Many essential oils and other natural compounds have emerged as alternative substances and researchers have realized the potential of natural substances in curing ailments. However, scientists have so far not been able to translate their antibacterial activity into treatments.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts packaged peppermint oil and cinnamaldehyde, the compound in cinnamon responsible for its flavour and aroma, into silica nanoparticles. The microcapsule treatment was found to be effective against four different types of bacteria, including one antibiotic-resistant strain. It also promoted the growth of fibroblasts, a cell type that is important in wound healing.
