A Chinese doctor from Harbin Medical University made headlines by successfully performing a head transplant surgery on mice. The process took 10 hours. According to ‘The Wall Street Journal', since 2013, Dr Xiaoping Ren, Professor, Harbin Medical University has operated more than 1,000 mice.

"The mice breathed and blinked with their new heads soon after the operations," said, Dr Ren. His team tried to prolong the survival period of the test subjects, which so far, lived for a day after the successful surgeries which were carried out.

Later this year, Dr Ren, the director of the hospital's hand and microsurgical center, hoped to further move towards performing head transplant on monkeys. Even though, he has not mentioned about human head transplantation, which could be possible.

"Head transplants would definitely help those with intact brains but broken bodies, such as people with spinal cord injuries, cancer and muscle-wasting diseases," said Dr Ren. In April, CCN reported that a terminally-ill Russian man has eventually volunteered for the first human head transplant surgery ever.
