More unplanned generation outages boosted average real-time prices in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator in September, compared with August and with September 2013, MISO told stakeholders Tuesday.
The real-time average price in September was $33.09/MWh, compared with $32.12/MWh in August and $30.27/MWh in September 2013, according to material used in Tuesday's informational forum, a conference call that included presentations posted on MISO's website.
MISO's average real-time on-peak price was $38.39/MWh in September, compared with $36.32/MWh in August and $39.31/MWh in September 2013. The Louisiana Hub had the highest average real-time on-peak price this September, at $41.72/MWh, and the Minnesota Hub had the lowest, at $30.92/MWh.
MISO's average real-time off-peak price was $28.46/MWh, compared with $28.66/MWh in August and $23.04/MWh in September 2013.
"A real-time price premium was noted, primarily due to forced-outage-driven scarcity and local emergency events," the presentation states.
An average daily amount of about 16,000 MW of generation capacity was in forced outage during September, compared with about 12,000 MW in August and 14,000 MW in September 2013, the presentation material shows.
At the Chicago city-gate, natural gas cost an average of $3.96/MMBtu in September, up from $3.96/MMBtu in August and $3.73/MMBtu in September 2013.
Illinois Basin coal averaged $1.85/MMBtu in September, compared with $1.86/MMBtu in August and $1.94/MMBtu in September 2013.
Real-time load was 54.9 million MWh in September, down from 63.1 million MWh in August, but up from 40.9 million MWh in September 2013, which is before the December 2013 integration of MISO's new southern region of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
