Genesee & Wyoming moved 31,731 carloads of coal and coke in July, up 4.4% from June and up 10.6% from the year-ago month, the short-line railroad operator said Wednesday.
The increases were primarily due to greater shipments to customers in the Midwest, Central, Northeast and Ohio Valley regions, Genesee & Wyoming said in a statement.
Year-to-date coal and coke carloads totaled 207,435, up 12.4% on last year, the company said.
Darien, Connecticut-based Genesee & Wyoming last week reported second quarter average revenue per carload of coal and coke of $357, up 7.2% on the year-ago quarter. Based on a coal car of 120 short tons, the Q2 amount equals $2.98/st, up from $2.78/st in the year-ago quarter.
Genesee & Wyoming operates 100 short lines in the US and Canada. Some of those that haul coal include Indiana Southern Railroad in Indiana, the Illinois & Midland Railroad in Illinois and the Texas Northeastern Railroad in Texas and Arkansas.
