Ukraine seeks to overhaul gas supply deal with Russia: PM

Ukraine insisted on a complete revision of its gas supply deal with Russia and would not be swayed by offers of discounts, Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk said here Wednesday.

"We still adhere to our old position: we should revise the agreement and set a market price for gas in it," Yatsenyuk told a cabinet meeting.

Moscow currently charged Ukraine 485 U.S. dollars for 1,000 cubic meters of gas, but a fair price was 268, Yatsenyuk said.

He described Russia's offer of a 100-dollar discount as a "trick", as Moscow could cancel that price cut at any time.

In the current environment, Kiev had no reason to trust the Russian authorities, so the Ukrainian side insisted on a contract revision, he said.
The two sides have been locked in dispute for three years over the contract, signed in 2009, under which they agreed to tie the price of gas to the international spot price for oil.
