India's chamber of commerce has urged the Indian government not to impose anti-dumping duty on purified terephthalic acid imports, noting that domestic demand in the country was much greater than supply.

In a statement on its website Thursday, the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry said India's annual PTA demand was 4.1 million mt, compared with supply of 3.4 million mt.

In October last year, the Department of Commerce, under India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry, launched an anti-dumping investigation on PTA imports from Europe, China, South Korea and Thailand over April 2012-March 2013.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the ministry is set to announce its findings at the end of March.

"The imports of PTA did not cause any injury as claimed by some of the players who want anti-dumping measures on PTA imports," the chamber of commerce said, adding that leading domestic PTA producer Indian Oil Corporation was not seeking anti-dumping duty on imports.

It also said that PTA imports from these countries would help India's small-and-medium sized companies to produce polyester, citing a PTA shortage in India.

The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry has over 1,600 corporate entities as members across various industries, according to its website.
