A flash fire at Formosa Plastics Corporation USA's petrochemical complex in Point Comfort, Texas, Thursday afternoon has injured at least six workers, local media reported.
Two market sources with knowledge of company operations said the fire occurred in one of the complex's polyethylene units, although confirmation from Formosa was not immediately available.
Emergency officials from several agencies converged on the scene at about 2 p.m. CDT (1900 GMT), after the fire ignited, the Victoria Advocate newspaper reported on its online portal.
Four of the injured workers were transported to Citizens Medical Center, with three listed in stable condition and one in critical condition, the Advocate said. Two other workers were transported to Memorial Hospital in nearby Port Lavaca with minor injuries, the newspaper said.
Details on the cause and/or status of the fire were not immediately available.
Calls to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department and the Calhoun County Emergency Management office seeking further information were not immediately returned. Point Comfort is located 120 miles southwest of Houston.
A call to Formosa Plastics Corporation USA's headquarters in Livingston, New Jersey, seeking comment was not immediately returned.
Formosa's Point Comfort complex includes two steam crackers with a combined ethylene capacity of 1.5 million mt/year.
The company also produces 264,000 mt/year of linear low-density polyethylene, 673,000 mt/year of high-density polyethylene and 575,000 mt/year of polyvinyl chloride.
