LPG terminals with storage capacities totaling 640,000mt have been shut in Japan after tsunami triggered by a massive quake swept northeast coasts, according to local importers.
The volume accounted for about 16% of the country's total LPG storage capacity.
LPG tanks at a refinery in Chiba caught a fire after earthquake, and the refinery has been shut down so far.
A LPG storage in Sendai was still on fire Tuesday, with affiliated jetties expected to be unable to accommodate LPG ships in the near term.
In addition, a LPG terminal in Kashima was closed.
Japan has shut a combined 1.45-mil bbl of refining capacity so far, occupying 32% of the total, according to some seniors with Japanese oil companies.
Japan imported 13.93-mil mt of LPG in 2010, taking up 72% of its total LPG consumption.
Japan may have to use LPG and liquefied natural gas as fuel to generate power due to shutdown of nuclear power plants, industry sources denoted.
