Hong Kong-based Styron has increased prices of general purpose polystyrene grades and high impact polystyrene grades in Asia by $80/mt amid "increased manufacturing costs," the company said in a statement this week.
The previous prices of the grades were not given, but market sources said Styron's GPPS price was $1,750/mt CFR China and $1,930/mt CFR China for HIPS after the price increase.
Styron has a 260,000 mt/year polystyrene plant in Hong Kong, and can produce 52,000 mt/year of GPPS and 208,000 mt/year of HIPS.
The price of PS feedstock styrene monomer has increased by $63/mt, or 4.3%, from $1,466/mt CFR China on September 3 to $1,529/mt CFR China on September 25, Platts data show. SM was assessed at year-to-date high of $1,572/mt CFR China on September 27.
Platts assessed GPPS at $1,610/mt CFR China and HIPS at $1,810/mt CFR China, on September 19, up $30/mt and $45/mt from the previous week, respectively.
