Southern Natural Gas can start operations on the last portion of a 375,000 Dt/d pipeline expansion to supply a Georgia power plant, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said Thursday.
The $351 million South System Expansion III project was designed to provide gas to a Southern Company power plant near Atlanta that was installing natural gas-fired units and retiring coal-fired units.
The project was completed in three phases. The third phase included a 2.4-mile, 36-inch-diameter pipeline loop in Clarke County, Mississippi, and a 5.2-mile loop in Hall and Perry counties, Alabama.
The third phase also replaced 11.7 miles of 16-inch-diameter South Main Pipeline with 42-inch-diameter pipeline in Elmore County, Alabama. It also installed a 7,000 horsepower compressor in Harris County, Georgia.
FERC on Thursday approved Southern Natural's request to begin service on all of the Phase III facilities. The company requested to start service on June 1.
