European gas demand in April 2012 was up 11.4% from the same period of the previous year, according to analysts at Societe Generale, in the latest update of their SG Gas Pulse Tuesday.
The indicator is based on data from France, Portugal, Spain, Britain, the Netherlands and Italy, covering 61% of EU 27 gas consumption.
Soc Gen said that during January-April the SG Gas Pulse is down 1.8% year-on-year, however, making April's strong increase from 2011 unusual for this year.
Various estimates for European gas demand in 2011 indicate that it fell around 11% that year from 2010.
Soc Gen said that there was a risk of downside to its previous forecast of a weather neutral 2.5% year-on-year growth in 2012.
