Peruvian state promotion investment agency Proinversion will start selling in mid-June bid documents to entities interested in distributing LNG to 19 cities in the country, a Proinversion official said.
The LNG would be distributed by truck or boat, according to Victor Ahane, the Proinversion official, in a telephone interview. The cities do not now have access to gas, he added.
"The winner will be whoever can offer the broadest coverage," Ahane said.
Ahane said the companies will have to offer to build regassification plants to process LNG as well as ready a truck-ship fleet to move the product.
Details, including deadlines for submitting proposals, minimum investment, technical requirements and information about volumes available for distribution, will also be available starting in mid-June, Ahane said. Government officials anticipate to be taking bids somewhere in the second half of this year, he added.
The Proinversion effort would both parallel and complement a similar initiative now under study together by both Repsol and Petroperu.
Peru has an estimated 8.8 Tcf of in the Camisea Field, its biggest by far. Yet, most of the output has been used for exports.
Government officials are making efforts to meet campaign promises by President Ollanta Humala to make gas available for Peruvians.
