Middle Eastern polyethylene producers are studying the viability of producing metallocene-based linear low density polyethylene, or mLLDPE, a source from Japan-led consortium SPDC said Tuesday.
He was clarifying a story published last week, based on another company source, that SPDC was conducting a feasibility study on producing mLLDPE at the Sharq facility in Jubail, saying that was the result of a "miscommunication."
Several market participants have said mLLDPE will likely become "the commodity grade of tomorrow," due to its high strength and physical properties.
Several producers globally are exploring the possibility of producing mLLDPE, and some have already started producing this grade, though many balk at the high production costs.
