Ford adjusts production amid global semiconductor shortage

Ford is scaling back output and will produce several of its models without certain electronic modules in the near term as automakers around the world continue to adjust amid a global shortage in semiconductor chips.

"The global semiconductor shortage -- combined with parts shortages created by the central US winter storm in February -- is prompting Ford to build F-150 trucks and Edge SUVs in North America without certain parts, including some electronic modules that contain scarce semiconductors," the company said in a statement late March 18.
Ford will build and hold the vehicles for several weeks before shipping the vehicles to dealers when the modules are available and comprehensive quality checks are complete, the company said.

The night shift at the company's Louisville, Kentucky, assembly plant was canceled March 18, and both shifts at the plant were canceled March 19 as a result of the semiconductor-related parts shortage.

Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair production is expected to resume March 22 on short shifts, with full production scheduled to resume March 23, the company said.

Additionally, the company is taking further down days at its Cologne, Germany, plant, suspending Fiesta production March 1-16 as well as March 22, it said.

If the semiconductor shortage scenario is extended through the first half of 2021, the shortage could adversely impact Ford's adjusted EBIT by between $1 billion and $2.5 billion, net of cost recoveries and some production make-up in the second half of the year, the company said.

The semiconductor shortage has impacted automotive production throughout the world.

US President Joe Biden signed an executive order Feb. 24 aimed at addressing vulnerabilities in the US supply chain for essential goods, including semiconductors and large capacity batteries for electric vehicles. The White House is currently conducting a 100-day review across federal agencies focused on four key products: critical minerals, semiconductors, large capacity batteries -- such as those used in electric vehicles -- and APIs -- pharmaceutical ingredients that contain the active drug.

Semiconductors have become an increasingly critical component for automotive manufacturers as they add more electronic features to vehicles.
