Nine coal ships depart from Baltimore in week ended Feb. 7: cFlow

  Houston—Nine coal-laden ships departed from Baltimore in the week ended Feb. 7, down from nine from a week earlier, according to cFlow, Platts' trade flow software.



  The total dead-weight tonnage of the departures was 547,097 dwt, down from 791,490 dwt in the prior week, according to the data.Four of the coal carriers remained in North America, including one that is expected to load additional coal in Baltimore and one that arrived in Davisville, Rhode Island, on Feb. 8. One ship is traveling to Galveston, Texas, and is expected to arrive on Feb. 11, while one is scheduled to reach Saint John, Canada, on Feb. 10.



  Two ships are traveling to Gibraltar and are estimated to arrive on Feb. 16 and Feb. 18, while another one is expected to reach Bremerhaven, Germany, on Feb. 19. One ship is headed to Aviles, Spain, with an estimated arrival date of Feb. 17, while the final coal carrier is scheduled to make it to Singapore on March 20.



  In the next week, 15 coal ships are expected to arrive in Baltimore by Feb. 14, up from 11 a week earlier, according to the cFlow data.



  Twelve of the expected coal carriers are unladen, and three are laden. In the prior week, 10 were unladen and one was laden.



  S&P Global Platts assessed FOB Baltimore 6,900 kcal/kg NAR 3% sulfur coal, for 15-60 day loading, at $69.40/mt on Feb. 8, up 65 cents from Feb. 5.



  In 2020, Baltimore, the second-largest coal-exporting port in the US, shipped out a four-year low 14.67 million mt of coal, down from 18.93 million mt in 2019, according to US Census Bureau data.



  Over 62.9%, or 9.23 million mt, of the coal shipped out of Baltimore was bituminous coal, while the remaining 37.1% was metallurgical coal. It was the largest share for thermal exports in over nine years.
