Century Aluminum has finalized a sale in which it will ship 150,000 mt of its low carbon-branded primary aluminum over five years to Austria-based Hammerer Aluminium, the company said Feb. 4.
The low carbon aluminum, part of Century's trademarked Natur‐Al line of products, is produced at the company's Norðurál Grundartangi smelter in Iceland using energy from 100% renewable sources, according to a statement.
The US-based aluminum producer said Natur‐Al has direct associated emission levels below 2 mt of CO₂ for every 1 mt of aluminum, representing one of the industry's lowest carbon footprints for primary aluminum products. The measurement takes several factors into account like bauxite and alumina sourcing, use of renewable energy and operational efficiency, the company added.
Hammerer said the use of the low carbon aluminum will help it to produce its own aluminum billets at less than 2 mt of CO₂ per mt of metal.
"As a recycler and remelter, the CO₂ content of the primary aluminum we buy has a tremendous impact on our overall footprint," Hammerer CEO Rob van Gils said in the statement. "[The deal] underlines our ambition to contribute to a better future, and that aluminum is part of the solution for the ambitions of the EU Green Deal."
The aluminum produced by Century will be supplied to Hammerer by trading firm Glencore.
