Slovakia could turn into power exporter after Mochove-3 reactor start

Slovenske Elektrarne, Slovakia's dominant power producer, said its gross power production totaled 18.775 TWh in 2020, a slight fall on the 18.865 TWh produced in 2019.

Output should be boosted when its 471 MW Mochovce-3 nuclear power plant starts operation, a move expected to transform the country into a net electricity exporter, SE said.
SE said it delivered 16.994 TWh of power to the grid in 2020, but gave no figure for network deliveries a year earlier.

Figures from SE, which accounts for around two-thirds of national electricity generation, said hydro and nuclear last year contributed a higher proportion of its grid deliveries with coal-fired output and deliveries shrinking by around a third.

SE said 2020 grid deliveries from its two existing Mochovce and two Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear units totaled just over 14 TWh. Grid deliveries from hydropower plants totaled 1.846 TWh and from coal-fired power plants 0.865 TWh.

SE referred in its statement to preliminary 2020 figures from Slovak high voltage grid operator, SEPS, showing Slovakia running a small, but narrowing, electricity deficit.

Gross national electricity production in 2020 rose slightly to 28.991 TWh from 28.609 TWh in 2019 with demand falling to 29.309 TWh from 30.309 TWh in 2019, SE said.

Slovakia should become a net power exporter with an annual surplus of around 3 TWh when its Mochovce-3 nuclear unit starts operation, SE said.

Mochovce-3 could start operation at the earliest by the end of April, secretary of state for energy, Karol Galek, said in December, adding final objections to the start-up, for example from anti-nuclear regions or associations in neighboring Austria, could delay that target by a couple of months.
