Florida Power & Light's 885 MW Turkey Point-3 nuclear reactor in Homestead, Florida remains offline "due to an issue with a component on the non-nuclear, secondary side of the plant," FPL spokesman Peter Robbins said Aug. 18.
Turkey Point-3 experienced a manual trip Aug. 17 at 9:13 pm ET due to a "turbine runback" caused by a control valve failing to open, leading to a rise in steam generator levels, FPL said in a non-emergency event report filed to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Aug. 18 at 12:08 am ET.
A runback means the turbine reduced load, Robbins said, but declined to provide further details.
A lightning strike "is believed to be the initial cause of the runback," according to the event report.
"The plant is in normal electrical line up," FPL added.
Normal electrical lineup means that the reactor is stable and in the expected condition for a shutdown, Robbins said.
"As is usual in the industry, we do not discuss schedules for return to service," Robbins said of Turkey Point-3.
The adjacent 885 MW Turkey Point-4 nuclear reactor was operating at full power early Aug. 18, NRC said in its daily reactor status report.
