Russian petrochemicals producer Sibur has begun construction of the Amur Gas Chemical Complex (GCC) project, which is set to house the world's largest steam cracker as well as downstream polymer production plants, to be located in the Svobodny district of Amur region, the company said Aug. 18.
The Amur GCC project will include installation of a combined 2.7 million mt/year of polymer production capacity, of which 2.3 million mt/year will be polyethylene and 400,000 mt/year polypropylene, the company said.
The polymer facility will receive ethylene and propylene from the cracker being built at the same site.
Completion of the project is set for 2024–2025 and is set to take the company's overall capacity to 4.2 million mt/year, following on from the recently completed ZapSib petrochemical complex in Russia's Tobolsk region.
Sibur said the company will partner with China's Sinopec on the Amur project.
"As a national leader of the oil and gas processing industry, Sinopec boasts an extensive distribution network in China for oil and gas products of varying processing levels. This country remains the key driver behind global polymer consumption growth and is a target market for Amur GCC," Sibur said.
