Germany's Evonik plans to build a new polyamide 12 plant in Asia and increase the production capacity of its Marl plant, the company said Wednesday.
The plant in Asia will have a design capacity of 20,000 mt/year and is scheduled to be completed within three years, the company said.
Evonik's executive board has approved preliminary and basic planning for the new plant, which is awaiting approvals from other company bodies.
The company's existing plant at Marl will be expanded by 5,000 mt/year, which is expected to start operating in 2012, the company said.
However, when contacted Friday, it declined to reveal its total production capacities in Germany and Asia.
The company makes polyamide 12 starting with butadiene, which is converted through various intermediate steps to the monomer laurolactam, which polymerizes to polyamide 12.
Polyamide 12 is used in the automotive sector, electrics and electronics, household gadgets, and sports equipment.
