Poland's largest refiner, PKN Orlen, said late Wednesday it has suspended the head of its petrochemical operations, Marek Serafin, following his detention in a corruption case.
"The Supervisory Board of PKN Orlen on December 7 adopted unanimously a resolution in accordance to which Mr Marek Serafin has been suspended, for an indefinite period, from membership of the PKN Orlen Management Board due to his detention by the Internal Security Agency,' PKN said in a statement.
Serafin, who was in charge of PKN's petrochemical operations, was arrested together with two of PKN's petrochemicals directors and a businessman from the city of Plock, central Poland, on suspicion of corruption on Wednesday.
Media reports said a man identified as Marek S. under Polish privacy laws, had given preferential treatment to a businessman from Plock, home to PKN's 16.3 million mt/year refinery, in awarding contracts in exchange for property benefits.
The men were arrested following a request by the Appeal Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw.
