Norwegian coast guard officials deployed containment boom to control an oil slick threatening the western coast of Sweden, local media report.
Icelandic cargo ship Godafoss struck ground about 4 miles off the coast of Sweden overnight Thursday, sparking fears the slick could hit vulnerable lands off the western coast of Sweden, Swedish news agency The Local reports.
Norwegian military officials said they were concerned a national park and wildlife sanctuary along the coast would see oil on its shores.
Oil was leaking from two fuel tanks in the Godafoss. Each tank holds the equivalent of around 1,800 barrels of oil. Oil is reportedly leaking from both sides of the ship.
The vessel ran aground near a shared oceanic national park in the channel to Fredrikstad, Norwegian daily Aftenposten reports.
There were no injuries reported. Norwegian officials said the slick extended nearly 3 miles from the cargo ship. (iWireNews ™ and OfficialWire)
