Evonik Industries has doubled production capacity of molding compounds made of polymethyl methacrylate following an expansion at its plant in Shanghai, China, the company announced Monday.
The plant expansion has bumped capacity for the manufacture of PMMA molding compounds to 40,000 mt/year. The plant, part of a world-scale methacrylate complex, first began production of the molding compounds for the Chinese and Asian markets in 2008.
The expansion acknowledges the continued growth of the regional market and Evonik's long-term Asia strategy, the company said as part of the announcement.
"This move sees us further strengthening our position as one of the world's biggest suppliers of specialty polymers and also lending additional import to our Shanghai operations," said Gregor Hetzke, head of Evonik's performance polymers unit.
Evonik's PMMA molding compounds are commonly known by their PLEXIGLAS brand name.
