Private exporters on Thursday reported selling 125,000 mt of US corn in a single day for delivery to Japan during the 2018-19 marketing year, which runs from September 1 to August, 31, 2019, the US Department of Agriculture said Friday.
Japan was the second largest buyer of US corn during the 2017-18 marketing year, buying 11.991 million mt, according to the USDA weekly export sales report released September 6, which considered export sales through August 30.
The biggest overseas buyer of US corn in the 2017-18 marketing year was Mexico.
Japan has been also the second largest buyer of US corn so far in the 2018-19 marketing year, buying 5.386 million mt in addition to Thursday's purchase.
In addition to the sale of corn, exporters also reported the sale of 430,000 mt of US soybeans, 300,000 mt for delivery to China and 130,000 mt to unspecified destinations, all for delivery during the 2018-19 marketing year.
Exporters are required to report to the USDA any sales of 100,000 mt or more of a single agricultural commodity made in one day.
The USDA does not disclose the identity of exporters reporting the sales under this requirement.
Corn is the primary feedstock for ethanol production in the US and is the main competitor for dried distillers grains.
