Nova Chemicals has declared force majeure on ethylene from it's Corunna, Ontario, site in Canada and is working to determine the potential impact on polyethylene sales following an unplanned shutdown earlier this week, the company said Thursday.
A damage assessment for the cracker is ongoing and a timetable for when the unit will start up is still being determined, company spokeswoman Roxann Good said. The cracker has a capacity of 816,466 mt/year.
Good said force majeure also was declared for hydrogen and crude C4s.
The impact on polyethylene customer orders continues to be addressed, she said. Ethylene produced at the Corunna site is shipped via pipeline to the company's Moore and St. Clair River sites within Ontario where it is converted to resin.
Multiple market sources have indicated that spot polyethylene sales would be impacted, but it was unclear what -- if any -- decreases in volumes contract buyers can expect.
