Weekly US coal production estimate moves higher, still down on year: EIA

Weekly US coal production totaled an estimated 14.65 million st in the week ended January 20, up 8.7% from the prior week but down 11.2% from the year-ago week, Energy Information Administration data showed Thursday.

For the recently concluded week, coal production in Wyoming and Montana, which is mostly made up of production from the Powder River Basin, totaled an estimated 6.62 million st, up 10.6% from last week but down 9.8% compared with the year-ago week.

In Central Appalachia, weekly coal production totaled an estimated 1.8 million st, up 5.2% from last week but down 4.9% from last year.

Weekly coal production in Northern Appalachia totaled an estimated 1.99 million st, up 8.2% from last week but down 13.4% from last year.

In the Illinois Basin, weekly coal production totaled an estimated 1.99 million st, up 6.2% from last week but down 14.8% from last year.

Through the first three weeks of the year, US coal production totaled an estimated 40.2 million st, down 7.3% from the year-ago period.
