Canadian natural gas exports to the US rose 10.2% from June to July to around 255.7 million cubic meters/d, according to statistics released by the National Energy Board on Monday.

The largest gain in exports was seen at the Monchy point in Sasketchawan, which allows gas to flow mainly to the US Pacific Northwest and down to the West Coast.

Hydro levels, which had been strong from winter into the shoulder season, began tapering off in late June, leaving the region to increasingly turn to natural gas for power generation, sources said.

Monchy exports rose 7.3 million cu m/d to 52.2 million cu m/d from June to July.

Similarly, exports from the Kingsgate, British Columbia, point -- also a gateway to US West Coast markets -- rose 4.5 million cu m/d to nearly 47 million cu m/d during the same time frame.

Canadian imports from the US dropped, however, by about 18.8% to 19.2 billion cu m in July from 23.6 billion cu m in June, the data showed.

The Northeast did see a spell of heat waves in July, keeping US gas in local markets. Electricity prices in the Northeast soared several times during that month, either breaking or touching their record peaks, Platts data showed.

Imports via border points in Ontario, however, continued to dominate, making up nearly 95% of the total, a Platts analysis of the NEB data showed.

NEB also released LNG imports into Canada, specifically at its lone terminal, Canaport in New Brunswick.

A single long-term cargo, carrying nearly 82.3 million cu m, berthed in July having traveled from Trinidad & Tobago. The volume was a slight uptick from the 80.5 million cu m received, also from a lone ship from Trinidad & Tobago, in June.

Additionally, one short-term cargo came into port, delivering 157.5 million cu m in July, down slightly from 157.6 million cu m in June, also from a lone cargo, this time from Qatar.

NEB defines short-term volumes as those bought under a contract for less than two years.
