Japan will impose a temporary antidumping duty on polyethylene terephthalate imports from China from September 2 until January 1 next year, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said Tuesday.
The statement did not indicate the rate the duty would be set at.
Japan launched an investigation into the matter last September following a request by four domestic PET producers -- Mitsui Chemicals, Mitsubishi Chemical, Japan Unipet and Echizen Polymer -- which account for 57-81% of Japan's total PET production.
The companies in their request for a probe said Japan imported 364,300 mt of PET from China in fiscal 2015, up 21.6% from the year before, and the discount of imports from China to domestic Japan PET prices was widening.
PET is used mainly in the production of beverage bottles.
