Output of Chinese magnesium smelters in the first two months of this year reached 139,400 mt, an increase of 6.7% from the same 2016 period, according to figures released Tuesday by China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association.
China's top magnesium producing district, northwestern Shaanxi province, churned out 68,200 mt between January and February, rising 8.65% from a year earlier, the CNIA data showed. The volume accounted for 48.9% of the country's total during the two-month period.
Ranked second was northern Shanxi province with 23,300 mt of magnesium production in January-February, slipping 2.42% from the same 2016 period. Trailing closely in the third place was northwestern Ningxia Hui autonomous region, which saw output plunge 16.25% year on year to 19,800 mt.
January-February output of smelters from the three districts was 111,300 mt, some 79.8% of the national total.
