Methanol production in Mexico in January increased by two-thirds year on year and month on month, according to the most recent production data.
Methanol output totaled 15,000 mt in January, up 66% from 9,000 mt in December and 9,000 mt in January 2016, data from Mexico's energy ministry showed.
Pemex operates a 165,000 mt/year plant in San Martin Texmelucan in the state of Puebla.
Methanol demand in the country appears healthy and will likely be stronger than in 2016, a source in Mexico said.
Methanol consumption in the first two months of 2017 totaled 47,000 mt, the source added, 18% above the 40,000 mt consumed in January-February 2016 and 30% higher than the 36,000 mt used in January-February 2015.
The US exported 7,000 mt of methanol to Mexico in January, according to the most recent data from the US International Trade Commission.
S&P Global Platts last assessed US methanol on Tuesday at 124.25-124.75 cents/gal FOB USG for March and April.
