Taiwan imported 65.32 million mt of thermal coal in 2016, down 2% on the year to the lowest annual volume since 2012, as shipments from Indonesia and Russia dropped, customs data showed Wednesday.
Of the total, 64.08 million mt was bituminous coal and the remaining 1.24 million mt was sub-bituminous.
Imports of Indonesian thermal coal fell 18% on the year to 20.36 million mt the lowest annual volume since S&P Global Platts records began in 2012, while 2016 shipments from Russia were 6% lower at 7.05 million mt.
Meanwhile, imports from the largest supplier Australia rose 10% on the year to 34.07 million mt, the highest since Platts records started.
Shipments from Canada and South Africa for the year rose 9% and 15% respectively to 1.42 million mt and 1.15 million mt.
