January traded volumes of Atlantic market thermal coal derivatives fell 54% year on year to 198.7 million mt, although volumes rose 53% from December's three-year low, according to data from the London Energy Brokers' Association (LEBA) released Wednesday.
Of the total, 171.4 million mt, or 86%, was cleared.
Volumes of Europe-delivered CIF ARA derivative contracts traded in January dropped 58% on the year to 149.4 million mt, but also recovered 62% from December's three-year low. The percentage of contracts cleared during the month was 87% at 129.5 million mt.
South African Richards Bay January volumes were 16.03 million mt, falling 66% on the year, but were 48% higher than December's five-month low.
Cleared Richards Bay futures totaled 98% of the total volume at 15.7 million mt.
The data showed that 33.2 million mt of Australian globalCOAL Newcastle futures contracts were traded during the month, falling 1% year on year, but gaining 23% month on month, of which 79%, or 26.2 million mt, were cleared.
