Fluor Corp has been awarded an engineering and program management consultancy contract worth around $700 million for a major bauxite mine in the Boke region of Guinea by Guinea Alumina Corp, the US engineering group said Monday.
Working alongside GAC, Fluor will manage the development of a 12 million mt/year bauxite mine, a dedicated export terminal in Port Kamsar and rail and other infrastructure upgrades.
The mine is scheduled to begin production in 2018, the company said. Fluor successfully completed the feasibility study for GAC in the second quarter of 2016.
GAC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Emirates Global Aluminium, which is equally owned by Mubadala Development Company and Investment Corporation of Dubai.
EGA's core operating assets are Dubai Aluminium and Emirates Aluminium, whose combined production is 2.4 million mt/year, ranking EGA among the five largest primary aluminum producers in the world. The Guinea project serves as the company's entry into the global bauxite market.
