An "American First Energy Plan" posted to the White House's website as US President Donald Trump took office Friday promises to "embrace the shale oil and gas revolution."
"We must take advantage of the estimated $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil and natural gas reserves, especially those on federal lands that the American people own," the White House statement said.
"We will use the revenues from energy production to rebuild our roads, schools, bridges and public infrastructure. Less expensive energy will be a big boost to American agriculture as well."
The statement said Trump is committed to "achieving energy independence from the OPEC cartel and any nations hostile to our interests."
"At the same time, we will work with our Gulf allies to develop a positive energy relationship as part of our anti-terrorism strategy," the White House said.
The statement also said the Trump administration is committed to clean coal technology and would revive the US coal industry.
Trump himself did not mention energy policy in his speech at the US Capitol after taking the oath of office. He said trade protectionism would sit at the heart of his policies.
"From this day forward, it's going be only America first. America first," he said at the US Capitol.
"Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families. We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs," he said.
He said his economic focus would be to "buy American and hire American."
