Northeast US real-time wholesale power prices continued to rocket higher Friday with the hot weather keeping demand strong.
New York wholesale power prices jumped to over $1,000/MWh Friday afternoon, with hot weather continuing to fuel electricity demand heading into the weekend.
New York ISO Zone J real-time prices were around $1,075/MWh at about 3:50 pm EDT (1950 GMT) Friday and had been around $1,900/MWh around 3:40 pm EDT.
NYISO expected peak demand Friday of around 31.7 GW, compared with an all-time record peak near 34 GW seen in July 2013.
Just to the north in the ISO New England footprint, Internal Hub real-time power prices have been in triple-digit territory for most of the afternoon.
Internal Hub real-time power prices were $370/MWh around 4 pm EDT and had been as high as about $1,700/MWh shortly after 1 pm EDT.
ISO-NE demand was tracking slightly higher than forecast and was around 25.3 GW around 4 pm EDT, putting Friday's demand at the highest level so far this year. ISO-NE's all-time record of 28 GW was posted in August 2006.
