The UK government on Thursday agreed to cut emissions to an average 57% below 1990 baseline levels by 2032, allaying fears of diminished focus on low carbon economy following the Brexit vote.
The government, adopting the recommendation made by the Committee on Climate Change, said it will propose that the fifth budgetary period covering 2028 to 2032 should be set at 1,725 million mt of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e).
This includes emissions from international shipping over the period 2028-32.
The government needed to legislate the level of the fifth carbon budget by the end of June this year.
