Global petrochemicals producer Trinseo said Wednesday it is launching a new grade of general purpose polystyrene for use in medical devices.
Properties of the new resin material include high transparency, stiffness, rigidity and heat resistance, Trinseo said in a statement. Specific properties supporting medical device applications include biocompatibility, sterilization stability, and chemical resistance to fight infection, it said.
"The material may also be processed further with secondary operations such as solvent bonding, welding and laser marking, typical for medical devices," it added.
"There's a growing need -- especially within medical packaging -- for a medical grade polymer that performs well, protects the product, and provides an added degree of safety," the statement quoted Ben Porter, technical service and development engineer at Trinseo, as saying.
Trinseo produces styrene, styrenics, polymers, engineering thermoplastics, rubber and latex at 20 production sites across the world.
