Grupo Alloys Para will start operations of three aluminum plants in the Brazilian city of Barcarena by end-2017 or early 2018, the company's director and partner, Marcel Popovici, has told S&P Global Platts.
The project includes a 13,000 mt/month series 6000 billets facility (for products ranging 5-10 inches thick), a 1,000 mt/month aluminum powder plant and a recycling center "which will recover waste from the neighbor companies Hydro-Albras (a primary aluminum smelter) and Alubar (a cable maker), besides processing scrap from our own process," Popovici said in an interview Friday. Alloys Para also considers to produce secondary alloys at the recycling plant, such as 3104 for the packaging industry and "automotive alloys equivalent to ADC12, or A380, to sell to the local car makers or to export to Mexico or the US," he said.
By end-2019 or early 2020, the company would move downstream by adding an injected auto parts facility, also targeting both domestic sales and exports, he added.
"This is already decided, we must take advantage of our location in the North of Brazil," said Popovici. In the case of the billets plant, at least 30% of the output will also be exported, listing Chile, Colombia, Panama and the US as potential consumers, he added.
"In a second stage we plan to add an extrusion plant, including painting and anodizing services, to process these billets into added-value products such as finished windows," he said.
The total investment required is at around Real 450 million-Real 500 million ($132 million-$147 million).
